Central High

First Place, Rhode Island State Championship

This one just seemed appropriate.

Central has been one of our most dominant teams the last few years, led by a talented and record-setting sprinting core. In the last two years, these sprinters etched their names in the record books seven times! But as any athlete or coach will tell you, records and victories are nice, but the ultimate is taking home that foot-long trophy that's awarded to the team champion at the State Meet.

After coming close in the previous three states (indoor and outdoor), the Knights got their just reward on June 3, capturing their first team crown since 1995, defeating defending titlist Bishop Hendricken, 97-85. As been typical, Central dominated the sprinting events, sweeping the 200m dash, going 1-2-4 in the 100m and winning the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Additionally, the Knights also got 10 big points from Gus Karweh in the high jump.
