Quick Recap Of Rick Schomp Invitational

DJ Principe competing at the New Balance Nationals in March.

It would be safe to say that DJ Principe is ready to finish his final high school season off with a bang.

In a solo effort at Saturday's Rick Schomp Invitational, the La Salle Academy senior clocked the nation's fastest time for 3,000 meters this season with a state record  and nation No. 1 of 8 minutes, 16.60 seconds. Finishing second was Bishop Hendricken's Jeffrey Venter at 8:59.0. Principe's effort broke the meet record by more than 30 seconds and is nearly eight ticks faster than the previous US #1 of 8:24.01 by Connor Lane, set at last week's Penn Relays Carnival.

Toll Gate's Casey Gannon took both hurdle events. She dipped under 15 seconds in the 100m hurdles with a state-leading time of 14.90. South Kingstown's Eva McCool-Guglieimo was second at 15.0.

Portsmouth's Nikki Merrill Turned in an impressive double. She won the 1,500m with a PB of 4:39.60 (US #17) and also claimed the 800m crown in 2:15.30.

Continuing his outstanding outdoor campaign, Central's Donatien Djero broke his own meet record in the 200m dash, breaking the tape in 21.20. La Salle's Sam Coleman was first in the 100m at 10.70.

La Salle's Emily Kane was a convincing winner in the girls' 3K with her time of 10.02.4.

In the hammer, Ponganset's Gianna Rao moved up to No. 14 in the national rankings with a PR of 183 feet, two inches. Dilyn Cote of Woonsocket moved past teammate Jared Briere to No. 3 in the rankings with a winning toss of 205-7.
