La Salle Academy senior DJ Principe has a legitimate chance to win three individual titles at the State Meet this Saturday. The Ram standout is having a superlative season on the oval and is entered in the 3,000m, 1,500m and 1,000m. With the possibility of DJ pulling off the triple, it got us thinking - "How many times has this incredible feat be done on track & field's biggest stage?" We didn't have a clue, but we did know one person who would.
Thanks to Keith Lawton, our dedicated statistician when it comes to Rhode Island track & field, we do have a list. Below you'll see all the two-time winners and, yes, three-time champions. In the history of the State Meet, four individuals have won three gold medals at the championship meet,one of whom did it twice. That individual, of course, is former Classical great Maddy Berkson, who claimed the 3,000, 1,500m and 1,000m state crowns at the 2013 and 2014 meets. Former Hope standout Royal Cheatham took the 55m, 300m and long jump titles in 2011. The last girls to capture three events at one meet was East Greenwich alum Angela Bertholot, who was first in the high jump, shot put and 50-yard hurdles back in 1992. Only one boys has ever done it and, you guessed it, it was Westerly's multiple state champion and record-holder Andrew Springer, a victor in the 3K, 1,500m and 1K in 2009.
