Lady Skippers, Hawks Capture JV State Titles



Bishop Hendricken's superior depth and strong distance core proved beneficial on Saturday as the Hawks easily captured the team title at the Junior Varsity State Championships with 82 points. Chariho Regional was second with 41 points. Placing third was Central with 32 points. The meet was held at the Providence Career and Technical Academy field house.

Hendricken scored 37 of its points in the 3,000-meter run and the 1,500m. The Hawks' Eric Carlson won the 3K with a time of 9 minutes, 38.85 seconds. In the 1,500m, Dan Ruggiero led a 1-2-5-6 finish with his winning time of 4:21.52.

Nine athletes went over the 50-foot mark in the 25-pound weight with West Wawrick's Alex Cabral earning gold with a heave of 55 feet, 4.75 inches. Narragansett's Kegan Schroefer was second with a distance of 54-6.5.

The closest finish of the day was in the 600m where Coventry's John Agli edged North Kingstown's Kento Abeywardane with a time of 1:29.23 to Abeywardane's 1:29.28. Just 1.4 seconds separated the top six finishers in the race.
