New England Championships: Back-To-Back For Principe, Staples' Boys End 28-Year Drought


DJ Principe made it back-to-back titles at the New England Championships on Saturday. The La Salle Academy senior broke away from eventual second-place finisher, Patrick O'Brien of Oyster River (NH), after the first mile and cruised to a winning time of 15 minutes, 13.39 seconds for the five-kilometer course at Ponaganset. O'Brien finished in 15:20.93. 

In the team competition, Staples (CT) earned its first team crown since 1989 with a 72-103 victory over three-time defending titlist La Salle.

Jackie Gaughan of Exeter led a 1-2-3 finish by New Hampshire to capture the girls' title. She was timed in  17:34.11. Placing second was Leya Salius of Bedford (17:54.9) and Bishop Guertin's Caroline Fisher, a freshman, was third (18:00.60). RI state champion Ellie Lawler of South Kingstown was fourth (18:01.1) and taking fifth was Westerly's Randi Burr (18:07.93).

Pre-meet favorite Champlain Valley (VT) took the team prize, defeating runner-up Souhegan (NH), 121-163.
