Annapolis senior Maria Coffin, arguably the top distance recruit in the entire state of Maryland for the class of 2017, has verbally committed to her future college destination. In a public tweet on Sunday, Coffin announced that she will run starting next fall for the Friars of Providence College, currently a top 5 ranked team nationally in the NCAA Division 1.

Coffin, the reigning Maryland 4A state cross country champion who picked up 3 more state titles over the track season, will be a great addition to an already loaded Providence squad with her PR's of a 17:09 for 5K, 10:36 for 3200 meters, and 4:56 for 1600 meters.

A 2015 Foot Locker finalist Coffin ran competitively close this past weekend to one of the nation's top recruits and seniors in Kate Murphy of Lake Braddock with a 17:10 runner-up performance on the 3 mile course at the Frank Keyser Invitational.

With her college decision out of her way, Coffin now can turn her attention back to seeking a second straight cross country title and becoming a 2-time Foot Locker finalist. She suffered a rare defeat against in-state competition in Walter Johnson's Abbey Green with her fourth place finish at Manhattan two weeks ago, which sets up for one of the more compelling individual races for the 2016 Maryland State Meet on November 12th at Hereford High School in the 4A girls race.
