Former East Greenwich all-stater Nick Ross, an assistant track coach for the Avengers, achieved a running milestone on Thursday night. Ross became the latest Rhode Islander to break the four-minute mile. Competing at the Adrian Martinez Classic in Massachusetts, the New England Distance Project runner clocked a sixth-place time of 3 minutes, 59.73 seconds.
The race was won by Loyola University graduate Sam Penzenstadler in 3:57.80. Thomas Ratcliffe, a senior at Concord-Carlisle (MA) and son of former Cumberland High all-stater Tom Ratcliffe, was eighth overall with a nation No. 5 of 4:01.50.
