Bishop Hendricken and North Kingstown won the respective boys' and girls' team titles at Monday's Junior Varsity State Championships. The Hawks' depth proved too much in a 117-42 decision over second-place Chariho Regional. The girls was a much closer affair with the Skippers holding off runner-up Cumberland, 48-46. Finishing third was La Salle Academy with 45 points.
Hendricken did most of its damage in the running events. In the 3,000-meter run, sophomore Adrian Pierce led a 1-2-3-4-5 finish by the Hawks with a winning time of 9 minutes, 33.80 seconds. He was just ahead of ninth-grader Nick Braz (second, 9:36.09) and sophomore Sean Meahan (third, 9:36.21).
The Hawks' Dylan Manning,a freshman, won a thriller in the 1,500m, beating Scituate's Matt Vinacco with a personal best time of 4:17.74. Vinacco crossed the line in second at 4:18.81. Hendricken also swept all three relays, 4x200m, 4x400m and 4x800m, and had a first-place performance from sophomore Jide Akinjisola in teh weight throw with a heave of 51-feet even.
Classical's Adedamonia took a tight race in the 55m hurdles, edging past Central Jason Ramos with a time of 8.81. Ramos finished at 8.84. Hope's Elijah Akendolie was a winner in the 1,000m with a 2:47.49 clocking.
In the shot put, Central's Manny Rivera cracked 40 feet with a gold-medal heave of 40-0.75.
In what turned into a thriller in the girls' meet, the Skippers appeared to secured the team crown with a fourth-place finish from junior Quillyn Smith in the 1,000m, the second to last event of the day. Cumberland's Gabrielle Abramek won the race with a time of 3:25.46.
La Salle collected three first-place finishes, all coming in the relay events.
Coventry's Lauren Jacobs eked out a close win over Chariho's Devon Dipalma in the 600m with a winning time of 1:47.57. Dipalma was second at 1:48.0.
Toll Gate's Sophia Maynard also had to contend with some company at the end, taking top honors in the 3,000m with a time of 11:33, just over a second ahead of Cumberland's Grace Henson (11:34.25).
