No. 1 - Lady Sentinels take first state title since 1972

There were no records set or national titles won, but without question our top choice for the most memorable performance of the 2015 outdoor season was the Smithfield girls winning the state crown on June 6 with an exciting, down-to-the-wire 83-78 victory over second-place Hope.

The Sentinels, who won the inaugural state championship 43 years ago, were not predicted by most to even contend for the team plaque. But fueled by 54 big points in the field events, including individual victories from Meagan Malloy (hammer), Alyssa Colbert (javelin) and Stephanie Mattson (long jump), Smithfield was able to pull off the shocker inside Brown Stadium.

The final verdict wasn't decided until the final event of the day, the 4x400m relay. In that race, Mattson anchored the Sentinels to a second-place finish behind Hope to secure the hardware for head coach John Marchand's squad,
