East Coast Invitational: Paiva earns spot to NB Grand Prix

Dan Paiva left no doubt he'd be joining his teammate next month' in Boston.

In a solo effort from the start, the La Salle Academy senior cruised to the individual title in the mile run at Saturday's East Coast Invitational. Paiva won by 10 seconds with his time of 4 minutes, 25.44 seconds.

With his victory, the La Salle runner earned a slot in the junior mile at the New Balance Grand Prix at the Reggie Lewis Center. He'll be on the starting line alongside junior teammate Jack Salisbury, who secured his spot with a victory at Dartmouth last week,

"The goal was to come out here and win," said Paiva, who hit his opening 800m at 2:09. "I really want to make it to the Grand Prix. It's a competitive race. I wanted to join Jack there. That was the goal from the beginning to take the lead, stay on my splits and see what I can do."

Just a day after winning their respective weight throws at the Yale Track Classic. Barrington senior Adam Kelly and Classical senior Alva Hicks did it again at the East Coast meet. Kelly won his event with a heave of 77 feet, 11.25 inches. Hicks was a winner with the 20-pounder at 52-8.5. Kelly was also a runner-up in the shot at 51-2.50 and Hicks was fourth in the girls' event at 37-9.

La Salle senior Stephanie DiTraglia took the 55m dash with a PB of 7.36. The Rams' 4x800m squad of Elise Papazian, Karina Tavares, Michelle Renzi and Audrey O'Neil combined for a time of 9:47.52.

In the short sprint, DiTraglia beat her best by .15.

"I really tried to drive, to give it my all," she said. "Just do what I normally do."

Narragansett senior Carly Timpson continued her mastery in the high jump with a winning leap of 5-4. In the long jump, Cumberland's Meaghan Scullin edged Coventry's Charlene Theroux with a distance of 17-6.75. Theroux was second at 17-3.

La Salle's Eliza Rego was just inches from a victory in the mile, placing second at 5:01.05. Needham's Kaliegh Hughes won the race at 5:01.02.

Barrington sophomore Mars Bishop was first across the line in the 800m with a solid time of 2:01.18. Cumberland Jared Talbert broke the tape in the 55m hurdles (7.69). Don Djero of Central was a winner in the 55m dash at 6.65.
