Middle School State Meet: Toolin repeats for boys, Maio wins girls' title

In the history of the R.I. middle school state championships just two runners have broken 10 minutes for the three-kilometer course at Goddard State Park.

Sam Toolin happens to be one of them.

The Wickford eighth-grader captured his second straight individual title on Saturday with a dominating victory, cruising to a time of 9 minutes, 59.5 seconds.Toolin was less than two seconds from the course record of 9:58.0 set by current La Salle Academy all-stater D.J. Principe in 2012.

Finishing second on Saturday was North Cumberland's Nathan Rogers. The eighth-grader was timed in 10:38.9. Gallgaher's Joe Dos Reis (10:39.6), North Cumberland's David Collard (10:46.3) and Cole's Michael Del Sesto (10:48.2) rounded out the top-five finishers. Cole bunched its five scoring runners among the first 13 placements to hold off Wickford, 46-56, for team honors.

In a down-to-the-wire affair, Gallagher seventh-grader Ashley Maio copped the girls' title with a winning time of 11:42.8. Wickford's Lily Nunnery was second at 11:44.8. She was followed by Gordon's Ellie Hamilton at 11:48.8. Also dipping under 12 minutes was North Cumberland's Emily Haviland (fourth, 11:57.7) and Adah Anderson (fifth, 11:58.7).
