R.I. prep athletes earn gold at New England meet

Rhode Island athletes weren’t just competing at the Classical Classic and Cumberland Invitational over the weekend.

The Ocean State also made its presence known on Saturday at the NEPSAC Division III Championships in Bath, Me., a meet that featured prep school throughout the New England area.

Moses Brown had two of its runners break the tape at the regional meet. Senior Amos Cariati cracked 50 seconds for the first time in his career in the 400-meter dash, winning the event with a time of 49.89. Cariati also finished second in the 110m hurdles (16.6) and was third in the triple jump (40 feet, 5.75 inches).

The Quakers’ Nick Snow excelled in the sprint events. Snow, a junior, captured the 200m dash with a 22.75 clocking. He was also second in the 100m with a solid time of 11.39.

Wheeler School senior Nick Wignot was a winner in the discus with a toss of 138-8. He added eight more points to his total for the afternoon by placing second in the shot put with a distance of 45-11.75.

As a team, Moses Brown was fourth overall with 46 points. Roxbury Latin School took the team title with 71.33 points.

In the girls’ competition, Moses Brown was 15th overall with 12 points.  Wilbraham and Monson Academy went home with the plaque by collecting 92 points. MB junior Megan Horn was fifth in the 3,000m (11:24.50) and the mile (5:22.82). Quaker junior Arianna Cohen was a runner-up in the 100m hurdles (17.84).
