McMillan top finisher at N.E. meet; Barrington places second, La Salle finishes third

The state was well represented at the New England Girls' Cross-Country Championship Saturday at Derryfield Park in N.H.

Last week’s state titlist, Barrington High sophomore Emma McMillan, was the top R.I finisher, placing sixth overall with a time of 17 minutes, 55.6 seconds for the five-kilometer course. La Salle sophomore Eliza Rego and Classical senior Maddy Berkson also cracked the top 10. Rego was seventh at 17:59.8, while Berkson was eighth in 18:06.5. The race was won by Staples’ sophomore Hannah Debalsi, who won convincingly with a fast 17:15.8 clocking.

Barrington, which finished as a runner-up to La Salle at last Sunday’s states, fell short of defending its New England title. The Eagles still mustered a strong second-place finish to team champion Coe-Brown Academy of N.H. Coe-Brown defeated the Eagles, 78-99. La Salle was third with 108 points.
