Barrington shows its mettle at Hartford Riverfront Festival

The Barrington High girls’ showed their outstanding depth this weekend by winning the Hartford Riverfront Festival on Saturday.

The Eagles had all five of their scoring varsity members among the first 15 finishers to take the team crown with a 40-52 decision over runner-up Glastonbury (Conn.) High.

Sophomore Emma McMillan was the fastest among her teammates, placing third overall with a time of 18 minutes, 55.0 seconds. The two-time defending state champions saw their next three runners dip under 20 minutes with senior Mary Coogan taking fifth at 19:06.0, senior Julianna Portelli placing seventh with a time of 19:25.5 and junior Elizabeth Sawyer finishing tenth overall with a 19:50.2 clocking. Sophomore Julia Zitzmann was 15th in 20:16.9 to complete the scoring.

The Eagles didn’t miss a beat just two days later by easily sweeping their Metropolitan Division opener on Monday over Mount Hope and Moses Brown.  Barrington had the top six finishers in the race to easily defeat their league rivals with identical 15-49 scores. McMillan was declared the winner with her time of 19:59.4. Just six-tenths of a second separated the first five runners with Coogan (second, 19:59.6), junior Megan Verner-Crist (third, 19:59.8), Portelli (fourth, 19:59.9) and Sawyer (fifth, 20:00.0) accounting for the scoring.
