Barrington girls breeze to divisional title

 

Barrington High won its second straight Eastern Division Championship on Monday, easily defeating second-place Portsmouth, 166.33-119. The host Eagles, who have captured six of the last seven team titles, were bolstered by their depth and five victories for the afternoon.

Barrington senior Shenelle Teixeira set a meet record by winning the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. Teixeira, the defending state titlist, crossed the line in 46.8 seconds. She was also third in the 100 hurdles with a 16.2 clocking. Mount Hope junior Kylie McPherson won the race at 16.1.

The Eagles’ Emma McMIllan, a freshman, copped the 1,500 with a strong time of 4:51.20. Junior teammate Megan Verner-Crist was first in the 800 at 2:23.10. Barrington also had wins from sophomore Sarah Middleton in the triple jump (31-8.5) and by its 4x800 relay squad of junior Juliana Portelli, senior Fiona Paine, freshman Julia Zitzman and sophomore Lusine Gazeryan that combined for a time of 10:17.0.

In the sprints, East Providence junior Sierra Cunningham was a double-winner. She took the 100 with a time of 13.0 and the 200 at 27.1. Mount Hope freshman Karina Tavares won the 3,000, breaking the tape at 10:50.3.

Fresh off her third-place finish in the 800 at the Glenn D. Loucks Games in White Plains, N.Y., this past weekend, Bay View all-stater Erica Johnson set a meet record of 57.5 to win the 400. Barrington junior Abby Livingston also dipped under a minutes with a time of 59.3.

Tolman senior Veronica Wiggins copped the shot put with a heave of 34 feet,11 inches. Abby Cousens, a sophomore from Portsmouth, was the meet’s only other multiple-champion, winning the discus (97-02) and the hammer (129-0).
