Flowers a champion at Penn; Berkson competes in mile

PHILADELPHIA – Classical HIgh made its presence known at the 119th Penn Relays Carnival  on Thursday.

In the College Women’s Hammer Championship, former star and multiple all-stater Victoria Flowers of the University of Connecticut captured the event with a heave of 210 feet, 7 inches. Flowers, who has the high-school state record for the indoor shot put and 20-pound weight, easily defeated second-place finisher, Denise Hinton of LSU (192-6).

The Purple were also represented in the championship girls’ mile with junior Maddy Berkson taking 11th overall with a time of 5:02.01. The race was won by Jaimie Phelan of St. Mary’s in Ontario. Phelan edged Reagan Anderson of Tatnall (DE) with a time of 4:50.60. Phelan was timed in 4:50.66.

Scheduled to compete for R.I. on Friday is senior Zachary Hurd of Exeter/West Greenwich in the javelin (2 p.m.) and Chariho Regional senior Bryce Kelley in the mile (5:45 p.m.).

The three-day meet concludes tomorrow with eight high school events. It also features the much-anticipated U.S. versus the World competition, four relay events that include some of the best runners in the world.
