Class Championships Showcased The State's Elite

Boys' 3,000m Could Be Fierce

With the graduation of La Salle's DJ Principe last June, there has been no clear-cut favorite in this event to win the individual state title. Right now, it appears we have two that should be at the top of the list, possibly three. East Greenwich's Jeffrey Pederson, our state cross-country champion, had a relatively quiet indoor campaign. That is no longer the case this spring. On Monday, Pederson clocked a big-time PR of 8:33.90 (US #14) to win the 3K at the Class C meet.  Pederson won the race in a solo effort, beating Saint Raphael's Reilly Johnston by 25 seconds! Shortly after the East Greenwich standout captured his title, Bishop Hendricken's Sean Meehan also went sub 8:40 at the Class A meet with a winning time of 8:38.0. Meehan broke away around the midway point of his race and was all alone for most of the final mile. But a spirited effort by his teammate, Jack McMahon,  didn't give him much comfort room at the end. McMahon finished in 8:40.50, proving that his name has to be considered  as a possible contender at the State Meet.
