Rundown On Class Championships

Class B, Medium School Championships

It was Classical and Barrington in this one. Classical gathered 113 points to win the boys' meet.  Barrington dominated the girls' meet with 129 points total.

Classical sophomore Conor Murphy, who has been having an outstanding winter campaign, collected 22 points for the Purple. Murphy broke away from Chariho's Evan O'Neil late in the race to win the 3,000m with a 9:09.09 effort. He was also first in the 1K where he was timed in 2:37.31. Murphy earned his final two points in the 1,500m, which he competed in just a short time after his victory in the 3K.

The Purple also had a double-winning performance from senior Jehlani Gallaway in the sprint events. The state's top sprinter captured the 55m dash in 6.69 and the 300m at 36.41.

Portsmouth's Nikki Merrill clocked the fastest time in the state by winning the Medium School 1,500m. Merrill broke away from Westerly's Randi Burr midway into the race and coasted to a nearly five-second win with a 4:41.81 clocking. Merrill is coming off a weekend where she ran nationally-ranked times and all-time best in the 1,000m (2:49.43) and the 600m (1:33.57 at the Dr. Sanders Invitational in New York.

In addition to her runner-up placement in the 1,500m, Burr won the 1,000m with a best of 3:04.16. She was satisfied with her efforts considering that she has been recovering from an injury.
Lincoln continued its dominance in the weight throw where it has three of its athletes among the top eight statewide. In a mild upset in the Class B meet, the Lions' Evan Grivers had a nearly two-foot PR of 67-4.75 to beat teammate Garrett Doyle. Doyle, the state-leader, had a heave of 66-11.5.
