Class Meet Recap: Should Be Exciting Next Sunday


Two-time defending champion Ellie Lawler of South Kingstown solidified her status as the top contender for the girls' state crown, winning her third straight Class B title in a time of 17 minutes, 53.27 seconds, the fastest of the day.  Lawler ran alongside Portsmouth's Nikki Merrill for the first mile of the race before taking control the final two-thirds of the five-kilometer course. Merrill finished second at 18:17 with Patriots' teammate Elizabeth Sullivan taking third in 18:24.47. In the team competition, state-meet contender Portsmouth claimed its first class title in 32 years with a 40-73 win over South Kingstown.
