Big Day For MA Athletes At New England's

Burncoat's Rodney Agyare-May went sub 48 to win his second straight 400m title.

More than a dozen Massachusetts' athletes earned victories, and several more turned in solid, national-level performances at Saturday's New England Championship, held at Norwell High.

North Andover's Erick Duffy made it back-to-back titles in the pole vault. Duffy cleared a near record of 16 feet, 4.75 inches to beat his closest competitor by more than a foot. He was also second in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.24 seconds.

Also making it twice as nice was Norton's Brooke-Lynn  Williams, who captured the 100m dash in a fast time of 11.94.  Williams was also third in the 200m dash where she ran 25.02. That race was won by gifted freshman Emma Gallant of Cheverus (ME) in 24.81.

Sharon's Shira Stoller came less than a foot from a meet record in the girl's javelin where she had a heave of 148-8. Abbie Mokwuah of Longmeadow withstood a stiff challenge from Connecticut's Brittany Jones of Bloomfield to take the shot put with an all-time best of 46-11. Jones settled for second at 46-0.5. Dracut's Erin McMeniman was second with a distance of 139-2. In the girls' high jump, Wellesley's Julia Jordahl-Henry cleared a season best of 5-7 to claim the title.

Old Rochester's Danny Renwick cleared a winning 6-9 in the high jump. In his final tune-up for next weekend's New Balance Nationals, Burncoat's Rodney Agyare-May went sub-48 in the 400m dash, clocking a season best of 47.52. Agyare-May held off Manchester (CT) junior Jevin Frett, who placed second in 47.92.

MA athletes won three of the four events at the long and triple jump pits. Milton's Smith Charles cracked 23 feet in the long jump with a leap of 23-4.5. In the girls' long jump, it was Grafton's Lauren Eddy that was able to secure gold with an 18-1 effort. Foxborough's Shraeya Srinivasan continued her excellence this season in the triple jump with a distance of 40-0.25. It was her second time this spring over 40 feet.

Although she fell short of a victory, Newton South's Clare Martin ran one of the fastest times in the country for the 800m. In a loaded race where the top seven ran a qualifying time for the championship race of next week's nationals, Martin secured second with a PB of 2:07.91 (US #12). Martin did most of the pace-setting in Saturday's race and was passed the last 50m by eventual winner Kristie Schoffield of Merrimack Valley (NH), who was timed in 2:06.90 (US #4).

Lenox Memorial's Shannon Meisberger was a victor in the 300m hurdles in a tight race with Connecticut's Danielle Brinckman of Glastonbury. Meisberger out-leaned her rival and won with a time of 43.41, .03 ahead of Brinckman.

Recent state champion Davonte Burnett broke the tape in a highly-competitive 100m dash where he was timed in 10.48. Donatien Djero of Central was just inches behind at 10.49. Finishing third was defending champion Mark Doyley of Weaver, who crossed the line at 10.53.

Arlington's Ryan Oosting continued his stellar sophomore campaign by capturing the 1,600m. Ooosting, last week's MA mile and two-mile winner, clocked a best of 4:11.93. He was nearly three seconds ahead of second-place finisher, Tyler Marshall of Champlain Valley (VT), who finished at 4:14.62.

In the boys' two mile, Newton North's Andrew Mah dictated the race for much of the eight laps and won with a quality 9:10.36 clocking. Brookline's Lucas Aramburu took runner-up honors at 9:13.09.
