Once again another hammer thrower in Rhode Island has moved to the top of the list.
Classical High's talented sophomore Jacob Furland earned that distinction at Saturday's Class B Championship, held in Westerly. Furland unleashed the hammer a nation No. 2 of 219 feet, 10 inches, a personal best by more than 12 feet and five inches ahead of the third-ranked thrower in the country, Nick Lane of Bowling Green (OH). Michael Feldman of Tottenville (NY) is currently No. 1 with a 232-5 best.
The Classical standout's performance wasn't the only effort that stood out. Finishing second in the event was teammate Zeke Cohen with a distance of 210-6, which is ranked fourth in the country. Saturday's event featured five over 190 feet. The next three in the final results all hail from Lincoln - Garrett Doyle (third, 197-5), Matt Thibaudeau (fourth, 194-0) and Evan Grivers (fifth, 191-10)
