Records Are Made To Be Broken, Right?

BOYS' MILE (and more!)

Record(s): 1,500m (3:45.46, 2009); 1,600m (4:01.06, 2009); Mile (4:02.70, 2009)

We have to admit, eight years ago when former Westerly standout Andrew Springer established these marks at the Midwest Distance Gala, we thought it would be a long time before anyone had a chance at wiping these out of the books. Now it appears Springers' records are in serious jeopardy. The one person we feel has a chance to do it is La Salle Academy's DJ Principe. Like Springer did at the Illinois meet, we think Principe will take care of these records in one race. What race that will be is the bigger question? During the indoor season, the Ram runner came less than a second from breaking four minutes  for the mile when he clocked a state indoor mark of 4:00.94 with a loaded field at the New Balance Games in New York on Jan. 21. That event, as well as the NYRR MIllrose Games a few weeks later where he was timed in 4:02.96, had several professional runners and a pacer in the race to insure a fast time. For it to happen in outdoor, It will have to be the same type of set-up with another loaded field. It hasn't been determined yet by Principe and his coaching staff where he's going to make another attempt at breaking the four-minute barrier. When that's determined, that's the meet where Springer's records will be broken.
