State Meet Preview: Girls' Weight, Field Events

To begin with, there's potential for a record-breaking performance in the weight throw. Ponaganset's Gianna Rao is the only athlete in the country over the 60-foot mark, achieving her personal best of 60 feet, 8 inches at the division championships on Jan. 28.  That's a distance that broke the facility record at the Providence Career and Technical Academy field house and exceeds the current State Meet record of 57-9.25 by Classical's Victoria Flowers in 2008. Rao has a chance to not only get that mark this weekend, but the current state record of 62-2 by Flowers at the New England Championships, also in 2008. Four other throwers in the field have done better than 50 feet this winter - Pilgrim's Chelsea Yang (53-10.75), Barrington's Annika Kelly (50-3.75), Cranston East's Molly Botts (50-2.5) and Central's Keyarsa Harris (50-2). Will we see a 40-footer in the shot put? It could happen. Toll Gate's Ani Armenakyan came 10 inches from achieving that milestone a few weeks ago when she won the Class A title with a heave of 39-2. She is more than two feet ahead of the No. 2 seed, Lincoln's Samantha Andrews (37-0.25).  A foot behind Andrews is Prout's Sarah Mitchell. Armenakyan was a runner-up to two-time winner Jennifer Iozzi of Cranston West at last year's meet. She appears primed for a victory this time around. The long jump is up for grabs with seven athletes within a foot of each other. The top seed is freshman Virsavia Goretoy of West Warwick, younger sister of Ivan Goretoy, one of the state's top shot-putters. Could there' be a brother-sister celebration at the PCTA field house? You never know. The younger Goretoy leaped a PB of 17-4.5 at a league meet in mid-January. She was second to Westerly's Emma Santee at the Medium School Championships where Santee had an all-time best of 16-8.5. Barrington's Noelle Cooke (16-7.75), North Kingstown's Tereza Bolibruch (16-7.75) and West Warwick's Maya Turnbull (16-7.50) are among others capable a stealing the show this weekend. Lastly, the high jump features eight athletes that have done at least five feet.  Tied at No. 1 are Central's Rachel Mews and La Salle's Alexandria Montagano, who have both cleared 5-2.
