"Surprise Guest" at MileSplit's Summer Track Meet

Former Barrington all-stater Adam Kelly at MileSplit RI Summer Track Series on Tuesday.

The first of four meets in MileSplit RI's Summer Track Series this past Tuesday included a few "surprise guest."

Competing in the meet along with her husband and two young children (Marcus and Dylan) was former Providence College great Stephanie Reilly. The 38-year-old Reilly, who currently coaches alongside head coach Ray Treacy at her alma mater, was a member of the Irish Olympic team that competed in London in 2012. The 2001 PC grad qualified in the 3K steeplechase where she owns a PB of 9 minutes, 42.8 seconds.

Reilly, who retired from competitive running after the Olympics to raise her family, showed she still has something left in her legs. She finished third overall (males and females combined) in the 3K where she was timed in 9 minutes, 59.8 seconds. Winning the race was her husband Paul Reilly, a onetime standout at PC, who coasted to a time of 9:38.2. Like his wife, he also graduated from Providence College in 2001 where he was a sub 14-minute 5K runner. By the way, the kids also shined on Tuesday with Marcus clocking a time of 2:46.9 for 800m and running 15.1 for 100m and Dylan timed in 6:31.4 for the mile, a race won by his mother in 5:16.9.

In the hammer throw, which features a considerable amount of participants, former Barrington all-stater and national champion Adam Kelly was among those competing inside the circle. Kelly, who is prepping for the IAAF World U20 Championships in Poland at the end of the month, tossed the 6kg. hammer a distance of 236 feet, 5 inches. That was just three feet short of what the current Princeton freshman did at the USATF Junior Championships (June 24-26), the qualifier for the Worlds.

MileSplit RI's Summer Track Series will continue this Tuesday at Cumberland's Tucker Field. The meet begins at 6 p.m., although the hammer will start early at 5.
