Class Meet Wrap-Up: Toolin clocks 3:54 for 1,500m, finishes third overall in Class A race

Sam Toolin continues to amaze.

On Saturday, the North Kingstown freshman nearly stole the show in the 1,500-meter run at the Class A Championships. Toolin came just a few strides from a victory over favored Jack Salisbury of La Salle Academy, finishing third overall with an eye-popping time of 3 minutes, 54.2 seconds. That clocking is not only the fastest time in the nation by a ninth grader by five seconds, but also ranks him No. 6 among all high-schoolers from coast to coast.

Salisbury won the race with a meet record of 3:53.70. Finishing second was the Rams' Matt Bouthillette in 3:53.9. Bouthillette and Toolin were 1-2 coming down the final straightaway and were passed by Salisbury with just about 30 meters remaining. La Salle's DJ Principe was fourth at 4:00. Principe captured the 3K in 8:52, edging Bouthillette, who also was time in 3:52.

Bishop Hendricken won its 39th consecutive Class A title. Also winning were North Kingstown (Class A girls), West Warwick (Class B boys), Pilgrim (Class B girls), Rogers (Class C boys) and Smithfield (Class C girls).

MileSplit RI will have photos (and more!) of the class championships coming soon.
