Venable first R.I. finisher at Boston

Finishers walk to their belongings and family members after crossing the line of the Boston Marathon.

Ethiopia dominated the 120th edition of the Boston Marathon on Monday. Lemi Berhanu Hayle led a 1-2-3 sweep in the men's race with a time of 2 hours, 12 minutes, 45 seconds. On the women's side, Alsede Baysa beat fellow compatriot Tirfi Tsegaye by 45 seconds with her 2:29:19 winning effort.

Under sunny and windy conditions, how did Rhode Island fare on Patriots Day?

Former Bishop Hendricken standout Bronson Venable accomplished his goal of a sub 2:40 effort, finishing as the top runner from the Ocean State with a net time of 2:39.19. Venable, who ran consistently from start to finish, was 1:19:42 at the halfway mark. He was 111th overall among the nearly 28,000 participants.

In all, eight runners cracked the three-hour barrier.

Placing 350th overall was Justin Bentley of Ashaway. The 38-year-old Bentley was timed in 2:48:29. Jason Reilly, a onetime Cumberland star, was third from the Ocean State and 508th overall, finishing with a time of 2:50:46.

Not too far behind was Johnston's David Principe, who clocked a time of 2:53:28, good for 693rd overall. Scott Kulm, a 2013 East  Greenwich grad, was 750th at 2:54:04.

R.I. native Hilary Dionne, who competed just two months ago at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, was the fourth American finisher. The former Cumberland all-stater placed 23rd among women with a time of 2:50:56.

'I wanted to come out and sort of enjoy it and run a conservative race and see how I felt at the end," she said. "Going out even conservatively, with the heat, I was dead tired in the middle miles. I was able to pick it up at the end."

East Greenwich's Garrett Scanlon, a sophomore at Northeastern University, finished at 3:10:19. That was slightly off his PR of 2:53:50.

"My real goal was just to finish and have a blast," Scanlon said. "In that perspective, mission accomplished. It was really tough. It was hot out there and was windy. There was also a lot of hills."

Scanlon credits the crowd with pushing him to the finish down Bolyston  Street.

"I think I ran a little quick at the beginning, but it wasn't too crazy. My legs definitely felt it the last few miles," said the former high school standout. "It was surreal out there. Some part of the course, the people were like four or five deep. I definitely couldn't have done it without the crowd."
