Frosh States: Hawks, Avengers take prize, Skippers' Toolin, Nunnery first to finish

In less than two weeks, Bishop Hendricken has a legitimate chance to win the state title.

Apparently that might be the case in the next few years, too.

With seven of its runners among the top 20, Hendricken's youngest clan cruised to the team title at Monday's Freshmen State Meet. The Hawks collected just 36 points, defeating second-place La Salle Academy by a comfortable 52-point margin. Nick Braz and Aidan Tierney paced the victors by placing fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the girls' meet, East Greenwich held off a talented La Salle squad by a score of 44-55. The Avengers were led by a runner-up effort from Katie Bremer.

As expected, North Kingstown standout Sam Toolin was a convincing winner in the boys' race with a fast time of 12 minutes, 39.01 seconds for the 4,000-meter course at Goddard State Park. Toolin, a runner capable of breaking the top seven at the varsity state meet on Nov. 8, was far ahead of the field. Placing second was La Salle's Joseph Dos Reis, who was timed in 13:26.31. North Kingstown's Jack Perrault was third in 13:30.32.

Lily Nunnery of North Kingstown, younger sister of senior all-stater Bethany Nunnery, took the girls' crown with a 15:16.77 clocking. The Avengers' Bremer (15:48.11), Barrington's Tea Bishop (third, 15:52.71), Portsmouth's Elizabeth Sullivan (fourth, 16:03.99) and Westerly's Kata Cummings (16:09.58) rounded out the top five.
