The fans have spoken! Here's your most popular choices for our first MileSplit RI poll

(Classical hurdler Nathan Narcisse was fifth in the voting)

Needless to say, our first poll on MileSplit RI proved to be one of our most popular articles on the site with numerous people voting for their favorite athlete. We asked you to vote who you felt was the R.I. track and field athletes of the year for the spring season? In the girls poll, a whopping 2,337 votes were tallied and for the boys a total of 699 votes were tallied.

Surprisingly for the girls, Hope senior Quashira McIntosh, a multiple state record-holder and three-time individual champion at the state meet where she broke the tape in the 100m, 200m and 400m, finished fourth in the poll with just 125 votes or 5.35 percent.

It was the southern part of the state that made their presence known among the girls. Receiving the most votes was North Kingstown freshman Tereza Bolibruch, the state 100-meter hurdle champion who was also second in the 300m hurdles. Bolibruch nabbed 42.28 percent of the votes with a total of 988. Finishing second was senior Carly Timpson of Narragansett, a top high-jumper and weight-thrower with 936 votes. Narragansett also occupied No. 3 with 800m state champion Marissa McPhillips grabbing 136 votes.

Here's how the remaining votes went: McIntosh, La Salle distance ace and state 1,500m winner Eliza Rego (fifth, 84 votes), La Salle 3K state titlist and 5K state-record holder Sheridan Wilbur (sixth, 29 votes), Smithfield's versatile junior and state long-jump champion Stephanie Mattson (seventh, 12 votes), Hope's Chevell Burgess, the state's 300n hurdle victor (eighth, 11 votes), senior Alva Hicks, the discus state record-holder (ninth, 10 votes) and hammer champion and Smithfield junior Megan Malloy (tenth, 6 votes).

For the boys, South Kingstown's Anthony Shepherd, the long-jump state champion with a best of 22-4.5 this past spring, collected 58.08 percent of votes with 406. La Salle Academy multiple all-stater and 4:06 miler Jack Salisbury was second with 190 votes. Barrington's nationally-ranked weight-throwers Adam Kelly (38 votes) and Bobby Colantonio (32 votes) were third and fourth. Rounding out the remaining five athletes was Classical's all-state hurdler Nathan Narcisse (fifth, 29 votes), La Salle distance ace and 3K state champion Matt Bouthillette (sixth, 29 points), Central sprinter and 100m state titlist Donatien Djero (seventh, 20 votes), Central's 400m state champion Austin Walo (eighth, 20 votes) and Mount Pleasant's Trevaine Clark (ninth, five votes).
