Hawks, Rams win frosh state titles

Bishop Hendricken and La Salle Academy were the respective boys' and girls' champions of the Freshmen State Meet, held Monday at the Providence Career and Technical Academy field house.The Hawks defeated second-place Chariho Regional, 123.5-66, while the Rams coasted past runner-up Classical, 90-49.

Three meet marks were set in the girls' competition with Mount Pleasant's Joangely Mata tossing the 20-pound weight a record distance of 42 feet, 9.5 inches and La Salle etching its name in the books with its first-place 4x200m (1:51.99) and 4x400m (4:21.51) relay squads. The Rams, who also captured the 4x800m relay, had an individual victory from Chiara DiPalma in the long jump with a leap of 14-11.

Westerly's Randi Burr and East Greenwich's Laura Murphy earned multiple victories. Burr copped the 600m (1:43.72), the 1,000m (3:11.72) and the 1,500m (4:53.93). The Avengers' Murphy took care of the sprints by breaking the tape in the 55m dash (7.53) and the 300m (44.07).

Barrington's Grace Connolly was first across the line in the 3,000m with a time of 11:18.08, more than 43 seconds ahead of her closest rival.

Hendricken collected 30 of its points by sweeping the relay events. The Hawks posted a time of 1:40.13 for the 4x200m, 3:57.18 for the 4x400m and 9:35.26 for the 4x800m. Hendricken also had a double-winning effort from Harry Antone, who won the 300m (38.53) and the 600m (1:33.60).

Westerly's Matt Walker also copped two events, winning the 1,000m with a time of 2:49.12 and the 1,500m at 4:25.14, nearly 15 seconds ahead of the chase pack.

Toll Gate';s Nikolas Reygadas took the 3K in 10:29.01 and Classical's Jehlani Gallaway was an impressive victor in the high jump where he cleared 5-10.
