Conneciticut’s top athletes were split up at two different meets this weekend.
Most teams made the short trip over the border to
the Rhody Track & Field Classic. Several from the Nutmeg State had podium
placements in the six-hour meet, held at the University of Rhode Island’s
Mackal Field House.
Bloomfield senior Tashay Roberts captured the
600-meter run with a time of 1 minute, 38.62 seconds, a nearly four-second
best. Roberts also took second in the 300m with a 43.02 clocking. Bloomfield
also had a victory from its 4x400m squad that was timed in 4:17.08.
In the 55m hurdles, East Lyme junior Gianna Folz
broke the tape in a PB of 8.79. She was sixth at last year’s meet and is
undefeated so far in the hurdles.
“I was nervous because someone had a false start so
we got to the first hurdle and had to start over,” Folz said. “I didn’t think I
could do as well as I did, seeded first. But it turned out to be good.”
Megan Brawner, a junior from Ledyard, was second in the
1,000m with a time of 3:13.75. Griswold freshman Kalliana Botelho was a
runner-up in the high jump with a leap of five-feet even. Bloomfield senior
Kimmoi Fergusson also snared a second, earning her placement in the shot put
with a heave of 35 feet, 11 inches.
On the boys’ side, five athletes took home gold.
Norwich Free Academy senior Andris Vital won a tight
race in the 55m dash, edging Tim Gibson of East Meadow, N.Y., with a winning
time of 6.65. Gibson crossed the line at 6.76. Bloomfield Zaheer Anderson was
third in 6.79. Anderson did come home with a victory, taking the long jump with
a leap of 20-4.5.
In the shot put, Bloomfield’s Paul May heaved the
metal ball a distance of 53-7. Ledyard senior Bryce Hedman copped the 3,200m at
9:51.01 and the Stonington 4x200m relay placed first with a time of 1:36.22.
At Dartmouth, Danbury finished fifth as a team in
the boys’ meet with 27 points. The Mad Hatters won the 4x400m relay with a time
of 3:31.76. Danbury also had a victory from senior Mathew Andrew in the 55m
dash. Andrew, who won the event at the Wintergreen Invitational a week earlier,
was timed in a PB of 6.52.
In the mile run, Glastonbury senior Randy Neish was third overall with a time of 4:22.74.
