Local quartet competes at NCAA meet

Four local athletes and Providence College runners were in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday for the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

PC senior Brian Doyle (Bishop Hendricken) was the fifth man for the Friars, placing 149th overall with a time of 31 minutes, 56.70 seconds for the 10,000-meter course. Sophomore Trevor Crawley (Cumberland)  was 173rd at 32:09.20 and junior Liam Hillery (Smithfield) was 219th with a time of 32:57.80.  As a team, Providence finished 13th among the 31 schools.

In the women's race, junior Molly Keating (La Salle Academy) was 219th with a time of 22:09.20 for the 6K course. The Lady Friars, last year's team champion, were 13th overal.

University of Oregon sophomore Edward Cheserek defended his crown in the men's race with a winning effort of 30:19.40. Colorado also made it back-to-back titles by defeating second-place Stanford, 65-98. In the women's race, Kate Avery of Iona was the first to break the tape, crossing the line in 19:31.60. Michigan State beat runner-up Iowa, 85-147, for the team prize.
