Skee Carter Invite: Avengers, Rebels take titles

Talented freshman Ellie Lawler of South Kingstown beat a quality field on Friday afternoon to capture the girls' varsity race at the annual Skee Carter (Bronco) Invitational.

Lawler posted an impressive time of 18 minutes, 22.97 seconds on the fast, five-kilometer layout at Burriilville Middle School. She was a good 150 meters ahead of runner-up Marissa McPhillips of Narragansett, who crossed the line at 18:46.25. East Greenwich senior Margaret McCaffery also dipped under 19 minutes, placing third at 18:53.93. In the team competition, South Kingstown had its five scoring runners among the first 20 placements to defeat second-place Smithfield, 66-72.

In the boys' varsity race, senior teammates Tommy Sommer and Noah Barreto led East Greenwich to the team title with a 1-2 finish. Sommer captured the race with a time of 16:15.76. Barreto was just a few strdies behind with a 16:16.25 clocking. The Avengers beat second-place Smithfield, 36-76.
