HS coaches, athletes: Great chance to earn $ for your school

It's just two more weeks until the Bobby Doyle Summer Classic in Narragansett. A great field is expected for this scenic five-miler on Aug. 10, led by past champion and recent Blessing of the Fleet 10-mile winner Matt Pelletier. Another notable runner scheduled to lace up his racing shoes is Providence College senior and Bishop Hendricken grad Brian Doyle, son of the race's namesake. The young Doyle has also indicated that fellow PC teammates Juilan Saad, a 4:01 miler, and Ben Connor, a low 29-minute 10K runner, will test their mettle on the moderately-challenging out-and-back course.

In the race's six-year history, a strong number of high school runners have also headed to South County for the popular event, one that has given more than $50,000 to assist youth and HS programs. Hendricken coach and race director Jim Doyle and his committee are hoping to increase that following with a new incentive. Any school that has 15 or more of its runners registered for this year's race will be entered in a raffle to win $1,000 for its program. Doyle noted that he will have a digital clock at every mile mark and at the 5K checkpoint for any coach that wishes to utilize the race as a tempo run for its runners.

The entry fee for any high school runner is just $15 and it includes a Tech T-shirt, an attractive finisher's medal and post-race refreshements. Remember all proceeds for this event, which remembers Rhode Island's legendary marathoner, supports Bobby Doyle scholarships and its Youth Running Fund. It's a win-win situation.

The race begins and ends at Narragansett Pier School on South Pier Road. It starts at 9 a.m.
