Hope's 'Q' at Worlds

Hope High junior Quashira McIntosh is the lone Rhode Island runner at this week's IAAF World Championships, held Tuesday through Sunday at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field. McIntosh will be competing as a member of the Virgin Islands National Team. Unlike the U.S. athletes, she was chosen to represent her homeland based on her previous performances and did not have to run in a qualifier.

The Blue Wave sprinter, a multiple state champion and record-holder, is entered in the 100-meter dash, slated to begin on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. PT (3:30 p.m. ET). McIntosh has a personal best of 11.80 seconds in the short sprint, which she did last year in her preliminary heat of the New Balance Nationals. She won the New England 100m title this year with a season best of 11.84.

This is not the first time that McIntosh has worn the Virgin Islands' singlet. She competed for the national team last spring at the CARIFTA Games in Nassau, Bahamas. In that meet, she finished seventh in the 100m at 12.29 and was fifth in the 200m at 24.48.
