It was a picture-perfect sunny afternoon for the inaugural Moses Brown Co--Ed Relays on Saturday.
Eight schools participated in the first-time event, including Landmark Academy and Concord Academy of nearby Massachusetts and R.I. entries Providence Country Day, Mount Hope, Wheeler School, Prout School, Paul Cuffee School and the Quakers. The meet featured 12 events with each relay consisting of two boys and two girls. The events were the 100-meter shuttle, 4x100m, sprint medley, 4x800m, 4x200m, distance medley, 4x400m, triple jump, long jump, shot put, javelin, high jump and discus.
The brainchild of the co-ed relays is Moses Brown coach Peter Vigue.
"It's something I just was throwing around in my head for a while," he said. "I thought wouldn't it be a great way to unify the teams and have them compete together against other teams.
The host Quakers dominated the winners' table by capturing nine events. Moses Brown's first -place 4x800-meter squad, timed in 9 minutes, 31 seconds, had two impresssive legs by its participants. Freshman Cris Argys ran a 2:06.1 split and Lucy Tortolani hit 2:31.3 for her leg. Amos Cariati, a runner-up in the 600 at the indoor state meet, was on two victorious relay teams, He had a 15.6 split for the Quakers' 100m shuttle hurdles and leaped 41 feet, 7.25 inches for his team's triple jump relay.
Nick Snow and Sarah Levine teamed up on a pair of winning squads. Snow was timed in 22.0 and Levine had a 25.5 split on the 4x200m. In the 4x400m, Snow was clocked at 53.4 and Levine circled the one-lapper at 62.5. Owen Russell had a toss of 121-0 to lead his team's to a win in the discus relay.
